Bike Tyre City's October '07 - May '08 Tyre Draw Winners & News
Happy Foundation Day Holiday to you all. What a fabulous winter's day it is too……roll on the rest of it so we can get back to summer again!!
Yeah, I know, it's been a long and busy 8 months since I kept in touch and posted the results of our Monthly Tyre Draw(s), but, believe me when I say that I really have had my thingy hanging out. When I last wrote, we were in dire straights with regards skilled hands-on people in our workshop due to a large degree to our boom industries up north and also construction projects elsewhere in WA. Well, I'm pleased to report that we have mustered a good team of able-bodied technicians to cope with our ever-increasing work-load once again. Under the guidance of our head mechanic and workshop manager, Steve, we have acquired the services of Matt & Andy, who are both up to the challenges presented in repairing motorcycles. Both are keen and enthusiastic to become the best they can be in their chosen carrier, and are developing their skills with great vigour. I do hope you can appreciate the tremendous challenges faced in running a labour-intensive business with today's skill-depleted pool of workers? No, it ain't easy, but then again, if it was, everyone would be doing it, wouldn't they?
The trip to China that never came off….
Well, just a few words on this……it wasn't meant to be I guess, with our own problems with staff, etc, so onwards and upwards we go. As it turned out, I recon it would have been quite a disastrous time to go there with their human rights issues over Tibet and the earth quakes too. We'll wait and see what happens in the aftermath of the Beijing Games and reassess things, but I'm leaning more towards Bhutan at this point in time. Just so you know what I'm thinking about, ok?
New TYRE products. (some from our last newsletter, for those who weren't on our list then)
Pirelli have just released their upgraded Diablo Corsa "III" with a softer compound to give it more bite than it's predecessor. These hoops will appeal to those who like to stay upright no matter what! Certainly the choice of track day riders who like to push it to the limits. It's a dual compound tyre too…….softer on the edges and harder in the middle.
Maxxis motocross tyres have finally made it to our tyre racks. I have been needled by the Maxxis distributor for quite some time now to introduce these tyres, but had to be convinced that they were competitive in both quality and price with all the other leading brands. Well, I am now convinced that they are, so we have them in all available tread-patterns and compounds. Maxxis claims that they will outlast any other brands life-expectancy, as well as perform to your expectations. I guess you'll have to try them out for yourselves. By all accounts, they seem to be working as good as we were told………lots of positive feedback in the last few months from many satisfied customers.
Michelin scooter tyres are arriving in more sizes than a bloke can find shelf space for. It's no secret, we have developed the biggest range of scooter tyres in Perth, and it's growing weekly. (Don't know why they need to develop a different size tyre for every scooter that hits the market?). This item just keeps on getting bigger and more out of control every month!
Bridgestone have upgraded their BT020 touring tyre range, and we are now stocking the BT021's in their place. They are still supplying a range of "economy" radial and motocross tyres, however, with another recent hike in the prices of these items, they are not that cheap when compared with current models........still a small saving for the budget conscious. The BT014 & BT015 sports tyres are now slowly being upgraded to the new BT016's (hyper-sport tyres) which are now standard fitment on CBR's, GSXR's & others. As is usual for Bridgestone, there has been a significant hike in the prices, and slight changes in compound and tread pattern. It always amazes me how we can have an ever-strengthening AU$ against the US$, but still we get price rises on goods imported from suppliers who purchase in US$'s….they must think we are totally stupid?! Like fuel, I guess, unless we stop buying it, the suppliers will keep on milking the cow!
Michelin now has Pilot Power 2CT's and Pilot Road 2's
Both of these are dual compound tyres and are set to dominate both the sport and the touring markets. I'd have to say that they have really done their homework with these tyres. The 2CT is a great tyre for the experienced sports bike rider who likes the track days, whereas the Road 2 is a fantastic compromise for the longer distances travelled combined with excellent cornering grip in all situations. All of the common radial sizes are available in both. After a nation-wide ordering stuff-up, the 180/55ZR17 Pilot Road 2's are now back in stock after about 3 month's of extinction.
Dunlop's new "Triple-Tread" Roadsmart is now available in most sizes
This is a brand new tyre for the sports-touring rider (if there is such a thing). It replaces the D205 & D220 touring tyres. As the description reads, they are a dual-compound tyre be it all by another name. So far the feedback is very good, and they will no doubt give the Pilot Road 2's a run for their money providing they can keep up good supplies.
Oxford Products
We have increased our range of items stocked in the Oxford brand. Now more disc locks, winter warm gear (socks, snoods, heated grips), handlebar ends, miniature indicators and more. Something to look at while waiting for your tyres to be fitted.
Staintune Exhausts and SFI Units
Now, I know that you know these are not new products, but, what is new to you is that we are now one of Staintune's major suppliers and tuners for the supply and tuning of motorcycles fitted with their products. You can now access their website from ours, and ours from theirs. Because we have developed a great relationship with them due to our ability to provide a better service when recommending, supplying and fitting their components, they have set up faster supply and better backup in WA for us. This, combined with our new dyno-tuning capabilities, puts us at the front when it comes to making that decision about upgrading your bike's standard OEM exhaust system. We are currently working with other exhaust suppliers to encourage them to recognise the mutual benefits of developing good relationships with people who can service the market for their products in a more efficient and professional manner.
And…following up on that, we have now become a major supplier of Vance & Hines products to the WA market. The Aussie importers have reset their product prices to compete with the "direct-import-over-the-internet" buyers, which has resulted in a drop of 30-40% over previous prices. We now stock, supply, fit and tune-to-suit all Vance & Hines exhaust systems, so give us a call when next you need a price on one.
I have to mention this little beauty of a product that a couple of my customers encouraged me to stock around Christmas last year . It's called an AirHawk. It's a cushion that you sit on and adjust the amount of air in it to distribute the pressure over a larger area of your bum by means of inflation of inter-connected air pockets inside it. I first came across this product in Germany at the Intermot in 2000, but thought it was too expensive and probably a bit of a gimmick. Well, after riding with one myself, with my aging bum, let me reassure you, it will renew a lot of lost comfort in to your long, and even not-so-long rides if you are in the same league as me. I carry most sizes, but the Medium Cruiser is the most popular @ $179 to give you an idea of just how cheap comfort can be.
